If a friend or someone you love is caring for a very ill loved one at home, be very specific about what you can do for them when offering assistance.
For instance, “Connie, I am on my way to town – can I pick up a few items for you at the store?” or “Would you mind if I just took on the responsibility of keeping your lawn mowed this summer?” How about, “John, I’m making a pot of vegetable soup tonight, can I bring some over for you and your wife?”
There are many assignments a volunteer can complete for the hospice program:
-Assisting with mailings in the office, filing, posting data into the computer, and telephone calls are just a few.
-Being a companion to the dying and his family can be a special gift. This can mean just sitting at the bedside or it may include taking the patient fishing or on a quiet walk, listening to soothing music, reminiscing about the good old days.
-Dressing as a clown for birthday parties.
-Assisting with children’s grief recovery camp.
-Participating in one of the fund-raisers listed under ‘Coming Events’
(include form to complete to apply for volunteer training.)
-Most importantly, pass the word. Let others know about the wonderful care your family received from Hospice of Helping Hands. Remind them to enroll in hospice early rather than later. Almost every family states, “We wish we had called you sooner.”
