•Many people send monetary gifts in honor of a special person or event. A perfect example is the mother of one of our previous hospice patients. The patient was a middle-aged woman who had worked in the restaurant industry her whole life but did not have any medical insurance. When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, Hospice of Helping Hands provided all of her end-of-life care free of charge. After her death, the mother started sending a check for $10 every month out of her limited social security income.
•Many businesses sponsor a hole at the annual golf benefit, or sponsor the luncheon. Some businesses match funds donated by their employees. Some people give good used items to be sold at the annual yard sale, others donate good used medical equipment and supplies to the program.
•United Way has been a supporter of this hospice program for more than 20 years. If you have donations made to United Way directly from your payroll check, you can designate that those funds be directed to our program.
•During the Leave A Legacy campaign, some of the hospice volunteers and employees found they could benefit the agency by designating hospice as a beneficiary of their life insurance, trust fund, or estate. One employee increased her life insurance to $100,000 and designated that 25% of the funds be given to hospice upon her death. She felt she could make a significant contribution in this way without limiting her current income.
•One couple who volunteers for Hospice of Helping Hands has established the JL Howard Trust Fund with Northeast Michigan Community Foundation. This is an irrevocable endowment fund that anyone can contribute to. The interest is sent to Hospice every year but the principle is not touched so it becomes a perpetual gift.
